Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is the member of the company management responsible for things like technical innovation strategy and technological direction. He is responsible for the implementation and development of new technologies and is tasked with increasing efficiency in order to remain competitive.
What are the tasks of a CTO?
The CTO has various tasks within the company:
- Observation and evaluation of technological trends and their development
- Security and efficiency of IT systems
- Monitoring of projects
- Development of new software and technical solutions
It depends on the size of the company and also the form, which tasks you have in detail. If you work in a large organisation, one of your main tasks will certainly be the development and implementation of new technologies, which will revolve around external customers and partners. As they usually have an IT team, you can focus your role on research and development and expanding customer relationships.
In medium-sized companies, your responsibilities can be both internal and external. In many cases, you may also be given responsibility for the IT infrastructure and security.
In small companies, your role can be very varied and overlap with that of an IT manager. You will be responsible for the entire IT infrastructure, including networks, IT security and data management.
How can you become a CTO?
Most applicants have an academic degree in computer science, information technology, engineering or similar fields. You can achieve this with a Master's or Bachelor's degree.
However, you should also have practical experience. You should already have several years of experience in various IT positions. You will have gained a broad knowledge of different technical areas.
The following positions are particularly valuable:
- IT management
- System administration
- Project management
In addition, as a CTO you must of course have very good leadership skills. You are responsible for leading your team and motivating your employees. You must be able to make strategic decisions.
How much can you earn as a CTO?
As you have already seen from the tasks of a CTO, there are positions in large, medium-sized and small companies. The salary varies accordingly, as larger companies can generally pay higher salaries.
As a rule, the salary of a CTO is between 150,000 and 200,000 euros gross per year. If the company is very large or international, the average salary can even rise to up to 250,000 euros gross per year.
Many large companies can afford to give their CTO additional financial incentives in the form of bonuses or share options or company-specific incentives. Furthermore, it is quite possible to earn a salary of well over 300,000 euros gross per year if you have more than 10 years of professional experience as a CTO.
